Bodegas Morca

Location: Campo de Borja, Spain

Who: Gil Family

Bodegas Morca was founded in 2015 by the Gil Family in the appellation of Campo de Borja, Aragón, Spain, planted with Garnacha vines up to 87 years-old. The Gil Family has made it their mission to care for them as if their own ancestors had been the ones to plant them, going as far as to name the vineyards after their previous owners. Wines are made under the direction of Australian winemaker Francisco Gonzalez.

Known as “The Empire of Garnacha”, Campo de Borja is characterized by dense vineyards at an altitude of 1,500 to 3,000 feet above sea level. The soils are stony and ferrous clay, with good exposure to the sun. Embracing the limestone soils of the fields of Borja, the old strains resist the furious Cierzo winds. The wind leaves a mark on the character of the vines facing this phenomenon that is heard and felt, sometimes with the strength of a hurricane, but unseen. In the Garnacha Empire, each grape is proud of resisting the high contrasts of temperature and the thirst of soils. These wines display massive power, while showing minerality and finesse – quite unlike any other Grenache around the world.
